VIC’s Most Iconic 4WD Tracks You Need to Conquer
Victoria's High Country has no shortage of 4WD tracks, but a handful have built reputations that stretch well beyond the ranges.
These are the tracks people remember for the climbs, river crossings, ridgelines and long days behind the wheel. Some are technical, some are remote, and conditions can change the character of any of them quickly.
If you're putting together a High Country run, these six deserve a place on the list.
1. Billy Goat Bluff Track
Billy Goat Bluff is one of the best-known 4WD climbs in Victoria. Rising sharply out of the Wonnangatta Valley region towards the Pinnacles, it's steep, exposed and packed with the sort of High Country scenery that makes the climb worth the effort.
Track conditions can vary considerably with weather, traffic and maintenance, so it's a track to approach with proper preparation rather than assumptions based on somebody else's trip.

2. Blue Rag Range Track
Few Victorian tracks are as instantly recognisable as Blue Rag. The track follows a high ridgeline through the Victorian Alps, with exposed sections and wide views across the surrounding ranges.
It's the ridgeline that gives Blue Rag its reputation. In clear conditions the views are hard to beat, but alpine weather can change quickly and seasonal closures are part of travelling in this country. Check current track access before heading in.

3. Crooked River Track
Crooked River swaps exposed alpine ridges for repeated river crossings and tight valley country. The crossings are what define the drive, with water levels and track conditions playing a major role in how straightforward the trip is.
It's classic High Country touring where checking conditions matters. A crossing that was simple on somebody else's trip can be a very different proposition after rain.

4. Zeka Spur Track
Zeka Spur is one of the key 4WD access routes into Wonnangatta Valley. It's a long descent or climb through steep High Country terrain, and it's often part of a bigger trip rather than the destination on its own.
That's what makes Zeka Spur important. It connects naturally with Wonnangatta Valley, the Howitt High Plains and some of the best-known hut and track country in the region.

5. Haunted Stream Track
Haunted Stream is a different kind of High Country run. Rather than one massive climb or famous viewpoint, the experience comes from working your way through remote bush and a long succession of creek crossings.
It's the sort of track where the journey itself is the reason for being there. Water levels, fallen timber and changing track conditions can all affect the run, so current local information matters.

6. Bluff Track
Bluff Track runs through some of the most recognisable country in the Victorian High Country, linking steep 4WD terrain with the hut country around Bluff Hut and the surrounding ranges.
Rocky sections, steep pinches and changing alpine conditions make it a track where vehicle setup and judgement matter. It also makes sense as part of a wider High Country route rather than an isolated there-and-back drive.
