Bluff Hut – One of Victoria’s Highest & Most Rugged 4WD Destinations

Bluff Hut – Built by Cattlemen, Loved by Off-Roaders

There’s something raw and real about Bluff Hut. Perched above 1,700 metres on the edge of the Bluff, it’s not just one of the highest huts in Victoria—it’s one of the toughest to reach. And that’s exactly why so many 4WDers love it.

Bluff Hut isn’t just a remote camp spot with a killer view. It’s part of the fabric of High Country history. Built by cattlemen. Rebuilt by locals. And visited by those who don’t mind getting their tyres muddy and their boots smoky.

A Hut with Cattleman Roots

Bluff Hut was originally constructed in the 1950s by the Stirling family, well-known cattlemen in the region. Like many High Country huts, it was a simple shelter—built to offer protection from the brutal Alpine weather during seasonal grazing runs.

The original hut stood for decades until the devastating 2007 bushfires swept through the area. With support from volunteers and the Mansfield 4WD Club, a new Bluff Hut was built in 2008. It now stands strong with timber walls, a pitched tin roof, and a large fire pit out front—ready to offer weary off-roaders a warm night and a panoramic morning.

How to Get There

Bluff Hut isn’t the kind of place you just stumble across. You’ve got to earn it.

Track options include:

  • Bluff Link Track – A true High Country challenge. Steep, rocky, and rewarding.
  • 16 Mile Jeep Track – Often rough and washed out. You’ll want good clearance and low-range.
  • From Lovick’s Hut – Create a hut-to-hut loop with some incredible views in between.

Most routes require low-range capability, experience in technical terrain, and dry conditions. Bluff Hut is seasonally closed in winter, so aim for late spring through autumn.

Camping at Bluff Hut

One of the best things about Bluff Hut? You can camp right beside it. There’s room for several rigs, a fire ring, and a cracking view for your morning brew. Just bring your own firewood and follow local fire rules.

Other nearby options include:

  • Lovick’s Hut – A short drive away, with wide open camping.
  • Howqua Gap Hut – Rugged and remote, for the serious tourers.

You won’t find toilets or luxuries here. Just open sky, fresh air, and that unmistakable sense that you’ve made it.

If you’ve made it to the top, you’ve earned the bragging rights. And what better way to prove it than with a TracMarc Bluff Hut sticker?
