Frenchmans Track Cape York: Pascoe River, 4WD & Conditions
Frenchmans Track is one of those Cape York runs where the river crossings can decide what sort of day you're going to have.
Running for around 52 km between Telegraph Road and Portland Roads Road, Frenchmans Track cuts across remote country towards the eastern side of Cape York and the Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) region.
It's an unmaintained 4WD track known for steep banks, unpredictable creek and river crossings and conditions that can change significantly after rain.
The Pascoe River gets most of the attention, but Frenchmans isn't just one crossing. It's a remote Cape York track where preparation, experience and knowing when not to push on matter.
Where Is Frenchmans Track?
Frenchmans Track sits in central Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland.
Queensland Parks describes the western access as a turn-off from Telegraph Road, approximately 22 km south of Moreton Telegraph Station.
From there, Frenchmans Track runs approximately 52 km east to its intersection with Portland Roads Road.
That makes it a useful alternative route for experienced 4WD travellers heading towards the Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range), Portland Roads and Chilli Beach country.
How Difficult Is Frenchmans Track?
Frenchmans Track deserves to be treated as a challenging Cape York 4WD route.
Queensland Parks specifically warns of unpredictable creek crossings and steep banks, and recommends suitable 4WD experience, recovery gear and a snorkel.
Conditions can change considerably depending on rainfall and how much traffic the track has seen.
Expect:
- Steep river and creek approaches
- Unpredictable water crossings
- Rough and eroded sections
- Remote travel with limited immediate assistance
- Conditions that can deteriorate after rain
It's not a track where somebody else's trip report tells you exactly what you'll find when you arrive.
The Pascoe River Crossing
The Pascoe River is the crossing most closely associated with Frenchmans Track.
It's the combination of the river itself and the approaches that gives it its reputation. Water depth and flow can change, while the banks and track surface can also vary from season to season.
Don't drive straight in because another vehicle made it across.
Assess the crossing for yourself. Check the entry, exit, depth, flow and track conditions before committing, and be prepared to change the plan if it doesn't look right.
Cape York waterways are also crocodile country. Queensland Parks warns visitors to be croc-wise throughout the region, so assessing a crossing doesn't mean casually wading into unfamiliar water.
What Other Crossings Are on Frenchmans Track?
The Pascoe might get the photos, but it isn't the only water that matters.
Frenchmans Track also crosses the Wenlock River and other creeks along the route. Queensland Government mapping confirms Frenchmans Track crosses the Wenlock, while the broader route is characterised by unpredictable creek crossings.
That's why Frenchmans should be treated as an entire remote route rather than a drive to one famous obstacle.
Is Frenchmans Track Open?
Conditions on Frenchmans Track can change after rain and access into the surrounding Cape York parks can also be affected during the wetter months.
Queensland Parks advises travellers to check road conditions before travelling because Frenchmans Track and roads into Kutini-Payamu can become impassable following rain.
Check current park alerts, road conditions and recent weather before committing to the route.
Don't rely solely on an old video, forum post or somebody's trip report from earlier in the season.
What 4WD Do You Need for Frenchmans Track?
This is proper 4WD country.
Queensland Parks recommends a high-clearance 4WD, recovery equipment and extra supplies for travel into the Kutini-Payamu region. For Frenchmans Track specifically, it also recommends a snorkel and experience in challenging 4WD conditions.
Before heading onto the track, we'd want the vehicle mechanically sorted and carrying:
- Suitable recovery points and recovery equipment
- Tyres suited to remote 4WD travel
- Tyre repair equipment and a usable spare
- Air compressor and pressure gauge
- Snorkel
- Offline navigation
- Suitable remote-area communications
- Enough food and drinking water for delays
The Cape is a poor place to discover that something you've been meaning to fix finally needs fixing.
Can You Tow a Camper Trailer on Frenchmans Track?
Queensland Parks does not recommend Frenchmans Track for vehicles towing trailers.
If you're towing through Cape York and heading towards Kutini-Payamu, use the recommended alternative route rather than assuming a capable tow vehicle makes Frenchmans suitable.
Caravans are also unsuitable for the access routes into the national park.
Frenchmans Track and Chilli Beach
Frenchmans Track doesn't run all the way to Chilli Beach.
Instead, it reaches Portland Roads Road. From there, travellers can continue through the Kutini-Payamu region towards Portland Roads, camping areas and the turn-off for Chilli Beach.
Queensland Parks lists the Chilli Beach turn-off a further 17.4 km beyond Gordon Creek camping area, followed by another 6 km to the beach.
That makes Frenchmans part of a bigger eastern Cape York trip rather than simply a track with Chilli Beach sitting at the finish line.
Camping Around Frenchmans Track
For most travellers, camping makes sense as part of the wider Kutini-Payamu and eastern Cape York trip rather than treating the track itself as a string of guaranteed campsites.
Queensland Parks manages established camping areas within Kutini-Payamu, including Rainforest, Cooks Hut, Gordon Creek and Chilli Beach.
Bookings and seasonal access requirements apply, so organise the park side of the trip before heading into remote country.
The park may also close during the wetter summer months.
When Is the Best Time to Drive Frenchmans Track?
Cape York touring generally centres on the drier part of the year, but a date on the calendar doesn't guarantee good Frenchmans Track conditions.
Rain can change river levels, creek crossings and track surfaces quickly.
Rather than treating a particular month as a guarantee, check recent rainfall, current road conditions and park alerts immediately before the trip.
If conditions aren't right, change the plan. Frenchmans will still be there next time.
Frenchmans Track vs Old Telegraph Track
Frenchmans and the Old Telegraph Track are both major names in Cape York 4WD touring, but they're different runs.
The Old Tele is famous for its succession of named creek crossings as it heads towards the northern Cape. Frenchmans cuts east across the peninsula, with the Pascoe River and its remote route towards Portland Roads Road defining much of the drive.
There's no need to decide which one is tougher.
Conditions can make either track considerably more serious than somebody else's trip report suggests.

Preparing for Frenchmans Track
Frenchmans rewards preparation and patience.
Check the vehicle before the trip, know how to use your recovery equipment and carry enough supplies to handle an unexpected delay.
Download mapping before leaving reliable reception and make sure somebody knows where you're heading.
Most importantly, assess what is actually in front of you.
A famous river crossing isn't worth blindly committing to because you've travelled a long way to get there.
