Mt Terrible Hut – Big Views and a Brutal Name

Mt Terrible Hut – It’s Better Than It Sounds
Don’t let the name fool you—Mt Terrible Hut is anything but. Perched high on a ridgeline with views for days, this one’s all about elevation, isolation, and that unbeatable “top of the world” feeling.
Sure, the drive up can live up to its name (especially after rain), but that just makes reaching the hut even sweeter. This is where bushland meets alpine, where your UHF crackles with nothing but wind, and where the stars put on a real show.
A Rebuilt Beacon in the Hills
The original Mt Terrible Hut was a CFA fire lookout shelter, built to support spotters keeping an eye on surrounding ridges. After fires tore through the region in 2006, the hut was rebuilt by volunteers and now stands as a steel-framed, tin-roofed refuge that’s sturdy, basic, and much appreciated when the weather turns rough.
It’s still used in fire season and by the odd cross-country trekker or 4WD tourer looking for a top-tier overnighter.
How to Get There
There are a couple of ways to tackle Mt Terrible—but neither are Sunday drives.
- Mt Terrible Track via Big River Road – Steep and rough. 4WD only. Not recommended in wet conditions.
- From Jamieson via Eildon–Jamieson Road and Sappers Track
Conditions vary throughout the year, and the track can become extremely slippery—so engage low range, drop your tyre pressure, and bring your recovery gear just in case.
Camping at Mt Terrible Hut
The hut sits on a high saddle with a few flat spots nearby for camping. You’ll get:
- Space for swags or a small setup
- Panoramic views
- Epic sunrises (cloud inversions if you’re lucky)
- A fire pit and shelter inside the hut
This is true High Country camping—no toilets, no taps, no crowds.
Why It’s Worth the Climb
It’s not the easiest hut to reach, and that’s the whole point. Mt Terrible Hut rewards the determined: the ones who don’t mind a rocky climb or two for a bit of solitude and a sunrise that’ll stop you in your tracks.
And when the wind picks up or the clouds roll through, you’ll be glad that hut’s there. It’s one of the best places to test yourself—and your setup.
