Wallace Hut – The Oldest Surviving Hut in the Victorian Alps

Wallace Hut – The Grandfather of High Country History

Before cattlemen huts were a trend—or even a necessity—there was Wallace Hut.

Built in 1889, Wallace Hut is the oldest standing hut in the Victorian Alps, and walking up to it feels like stepping through a time warp. Weathered timber. Moss-covered posts. Snow gums twisting around it like they’ve grown up together. This isn’t just a hut—it’s a living museum.

Located along the Bogong High Plains Road near Falls Creek, it’s technically a hiking destination, but still makes a worthy detour on a High Country road trip.

Built by the Wallace Brothers

The hut was constructed by the Wallace brothers, pioneering cattlemen who used the Bogong High Plains as summer pasture. Its original purpose? A no-nonsense shelter for mustering stock, cooking meals, and keeping out the mountain cold.

Over the years, Wallace Hut has withstood fire, snow, and countless storms. Thanks to the care of the High Country Huts Association and Parks Victoria, it’s still standing—and open for visitors to walk through, photograph, and admire.

It’s a staple of the Australian Alps Walking Track, and one of the most photographed huts in the country.
